The Classic History Portfolios are designed for students ages 8, or 9 and up.
The body of the Portfolio is divided into chapters of
commonly studied historical time periods, cultures and civilizations. The Table of Contents provides a
thorough reference index to work with, indicating topics covering: works of
literature, important people, works of art and architecture, important
places and events, plus advances in science and technology. The attractively formatted Portfolios
contain an entirely unique
system of "image boxes" and "text boxes" that support and showcase the student's work, whether hand or type
written reports, graphs, diagrams, hand drawn images, photographs, or
images accessed from the Internet. Black-line maps of the regions being studied are provided.
Companion products are the Teacher's Guide, and Full Color Maps.
The History Portfolio Junior volumes are designed for students 5 to 8,
or 9, years old. The Junior offers a gentle introduction to history and
notebooking with plenty of games and puzzles, images to color, and as
much or as little writing as is appropriate for each child. A Teacher's
Guide and resource materials are provided in each book. The Juniors
contain the same chapter titles in the same order as the Classic
volumes. This way, older children using the Classic volumes and younger
children using the Juniors can work side by side. For extra convenience,
you may decide to purchase the Full Color Maps.
Created by a Homeschooling Mom
The Portfolio books are published by Barbara Shukin, a
homeschooling mother of five, with ages ranging from 19 to 3. She
has homeschooled since the beginning using the Charlotte Mason and
classical approaches. After receiving her MFA from the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago, she taught for several years at the college level,
and was the director of a college art gallery. She teaches in small group settings,
offering art classes for homeschoolers as
well as participating in local co-ops.
